Why Can EDS Make Sleep More Difficult?

The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of connective-tissue disorders. Depending on the type, EDS can involve joint hypermobility, joint instability, pain, soft-tissue problems, fatigue, and other symptoms.

For people with hypermobility, muscles may have to work harder during the day to help stabilize joints.

Then comes nighttime.

The upper body presents a similar problem.

When you're sleeping on your side, what happens to your top arm?

Without adequate support, the arm may fall forward or downward. Its weight can pull on the shoulder and influence the position of the shoulder girdle and upper torso.

The solution is surprisingly simple: give the arm its own pillow.

For people with EDS and hypermobility, the physical sleep environment deserves thoughtful attention too.

That means considering head and cervical support, shoulder and arm positioning, pelvic and hip positioning, knee and leg support, pressure distribution, mattress characteristics, temperature and comfort, and the ability to move naturally throughout the night.

Supporting the Whole Body During Sleep

Good sleep positioning isn't about achieving a photographically perfect posture.

It's about creating an environment in which the body doesn't have to work unnecessarily hard to remain comfortable.

For people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility, looking beyond the painful joint and considering the entire kinetic chain can provide a more complete approach to nighttime positioning.

Support the head. Support the arm. Support the lower body. And allow those components to work together.

Because when the body functions as a connected system, the way we support it during sleep should be connected too.
